KUALA LUMPUR:

Nearly 1,500 people in and Terengganu have sought shelter at relief centres as continuous heavy rain brought floods in low-lying areas. There were 1,170 people who were evacuated in and 276 in Terengganu.

The evacuees in Kelantan are residents from the Kota Bharu, Bachok and Tumpat districts.

At the Universiti Malaysia Kelantan city campus in Pengkalan Chepa tonight, parts of the main access routes around the campus were flooded, with water reaching knee level.

The irrigation and drainage department has projected that water levels in five major river basins in the state could rise further if heavy rain persists.

The national disaster command centre in Kuala Lumpur has issued a disaster operations readiness notice, instructing the state and district disaster management committees to be activated following rain alerts affecting Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis, Kedah, Penang and Perak.
