KUALA LUMPUR: World champions Chen Tang Jie–Toh Ee Wei moved a step closer to their long-awaited first World Tour title of the season after storming into the Australian Open semi-finals on Friday.
Tang Jie–Ee Wei, the world No. 4 and top seeds, were in full command as they outplayed world No. 17 Ye Hong Wei–Nicole Gonzales Chan of Taiwan 21-17, 21-15 at Sydney Olympic Park.
The victory extended their head-to-head record to 4-1 across five meetings.
Tang Jie–Ee Wei will next face either Taiwan’s Yang Po Hsuan–Hu Ling Fang or Thailand’s Pakkapon Teeraratsakul–Sapsiree Taerattanachai in what will be their eighth semi-final appearance of the year.
Despite being world champions, Tang Jie–Ee Wei have yet to secure a title on the BWF World Tour this season. Their closest attempt came at the China Masters in September, where they finished runners-up.
