SEOUL: South Korean cinema royalty Hyun Bin and Son Ye Jin have etched their names in the history books, becoming the first married couple to sweep the top acting honours at the 46th Blue Dragon Film Awards.
Held on Nov 19 at the KBS Hall in the South Korean capital, the glittering ceremony saw the Crash Landing on You stars achieve a milestone unprecedented in the festival’s 46-year history: taking home the Best Actor and Best Actress trophies side by side, the Chosun Daily reported.
Hyun Bin secured the Best Actor award for his gripping performance in Harbin, a period drama depicting the 1909 Harbin Incident.
He was recognised for his poignant portrayal of the inner turmoil faced by independence activist Ahn Jung Geun.
During his acceptance speech, Hyun Bin paid tribute to the martyrs who protected the nation before turning his attention to his family.
“Ye Jin, who gives me strength just by existing, and our son, I love you and thank you,” he said.
Earlier in the evening, the actor had displayed his competitive spirit on the red carpet.
When asked playfully who should win if only one of them could take a trophy home, he jokingly replied, “I want to win it.”
Meanwhile, Son claimed the Best Actress title for her role in No Other Choice.
In the film, she plays Miri, a steadfast wife and mother supporting her husband—played by Lee Byung Hun—through the crisis of sudden unemployment.
Reflecting on her career longevity, Son noted the passage of time since her first major win.
“I received the Blue Dragon Best Actress Award for the first time at 27 for My Wife Got Married, and now, over 40, I’ve received it again,” she said.
She also touched upon how her personal life has influenced her craft: “Becoming a mother changed how I view the world. I want to be a good adult and a good actor.”
While the evening belonged to the couple, No Other Choice was the night’s dominant film.
The black comedy, directed by the acclaimed Park Chan Wook, swept six categories, including Best Film and Best Director.
One of the most popular film awards in South Korea, the annual Blue Dragon Film Awards, established in 1963, honours the best films from the country.
