Malaysian police intensify crackdown on drug syndicates with international cooperation following PM’s cartel revelation.
KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysia Police has reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling both local and international drug cartels through enhanced cooperation with domestic and foreign enforcement agencies.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recent statement about a major drug smuggling cartel reinforces the government’s determination to combat transnational organised crime.
He revealed that the Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department continuously monitors international drug networks using sea routes and cargo containers as their modus operandi.
“The police and Australian Federal Police established a Joint Taskforce during the Interpol General Assembly in Glasgow on November 6, 2024, focusing on syndicates operating between both countries,” he said in a statement today.
This collaboration has yielded significant results, including the seizure of 33.2 tonnes of syabu valued at RM1.062 billion at Port Klang on January 25, 2025.
Another major bust occurred on November 7, 2025, when authorities intercepted 45 kilograms of syabu worth RM1.44 million, both involving containers from Central Asia that transited through Malaysia en route to Australia.
Mohd Khalid emphasised that these successes demonstrate police capability in enhancing international intelligence sharing to combat large-scale drug smuggling.
“PDRM asserts that there will be no compromise against any party that violates the law and threatens national security,” he stated.
The police will continue intensifying intelligence, operations, and collaboration at national and international levels to contain all forms of drug threats.
Media reports today revealed that Anwar, during a session with Sabah media in Kota Kinabalu, disclosed the existence of a large cartel smuggling drugs into the country that he had heard about for 20 years without action being taken.
The Prime Minister emphasised he would not tolerate the issue and meets weekly with agency heads to address such matters. – Bernama
