HELSINKI, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) — The death toll from a bus crash in Stockholm, Sweden, on Friday afternoon, has risen to three, Swedish police said late Friday.

Police told Swedish Television (SVT) that the identification of the victims was still underway, and it was unclear how long the process would take. Three other people, including the bus driver, remained in the hospital.

The bus driver was detained, but the cause of the incident remained unclear. The Stockholm health district told local newspaper Dagens Nyheter that two of the injured were in serious condition.

The crash occurred at around 15:30 local time (1430 GMT) on Valhallavagen, a major boulevard in the Ostermalm district in the northeastern area of Stockholm’s inner city. According to police, a bus without passengers hit a pole near a bus stop and then rolled over pedestrians on the street. Police excluded any indication of terrorism.

Police said the case was being investigated as “aggravated causing of death,” and prosecutors will decide whether the driver can be released.

Commercial operator of the bus, Transdev, said the vehicle has recently passed its statutory inspection and received new brakes. The company added that the bus was equipped with cameras, but the footage would only be accessible to police and transport authorities.

According to SVT reports, police initially imposed major traffic restrictions in the area and lifted them by early evening.

Earlier in the day, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said in a post on X that the cause of the crash remained unclear and offered condolences to the victims and their families.
