PM Anwar Ibrahim welcomes President Trump‘s active involvement in helping Thailand and Cambodia resolve border tensions through diplomatic channels.
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has welcomed United States President Donald Trump‘s active role in facilitating a lasting solution to the Thailand-Cambodia border issue.
Anwar confirmed he discussed recent border developments with Trump today, noting both Thailand and Cambodia’s commitment to dialogue and diplomatic solutions.
“I stress that both countries have withdrawn their troops from the border, in line with the approach agreed upon under the Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement Framework,” he said in a Facebook post.
“Therefore, I welcome the active role of President Trump who has also contacted the Prime Ministers of Cambodia and Thailand to ensure that any differences are dealt with in an orderly manner, to ensure regional stability and harmony.”
International media reported Monday that Thailand’s Armed Forces Chief suspended all agreements with Cambodia following landmine explosions along the border.
Four Thai soldiers were injured when a PMN-2 landmine exploded during a patrol in Sisaket province, with one soldier losing his right leg.
The Kuala Lumpur Peace Agreement was signed by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet during the 47th ASEAN Summit.
