Genting Highlands toll: Bentong MP calls for reasonable charges and smooth travel

BENTONG: Genting Malaysia should ensure its private road charge is reasonable and does not inconvenience motorists heading to Genting Highlands, said Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman.

She also proposed that the company implement an efficient payment system that avoids traffic congestion along the uphill routes.

“Special exemptions or discounts should be offered to residents, employees, and parents with children attending school in Genting.

“There must be continuous monitoring and maintenance of the roads and slopes along the Genting route,” she said in a Facebook posting today.

She said that after discussions with Genting Malaysia, she understands the company’s decision to introduce a private road charge for vehicles entering via the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway and Batang Kali in , but hopes her proposals will be considered.

Meanwhile, she said the Works Ministry has confirmed that the 24km Jalan Genting stretch is a private road and not under federal government jurisdiction.

“The construction of the private road charge gantry does not fall under the Malaysian Highway Authority.

“The works and specifications have received planning approval from the Bentong Municipal Council.

“Maintenance of the road, slopes, and disaster mitigation works along the route has been funded and carried out by Genting Malaysia since the 1960s to ensure the comfort of road users,” she said.

She expressed hope that all parties will receive clear explanations about the safety and comfort of visitors and motorists travelling to Genting.

“I will continue discussions with Genting Malaysia to ensure the private road charge is implemented properly and does not adversely affect residents.

“Genting Highlands is a popular destination that will see a large influx of visitors for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, so I support efforts to ensure the road and slopes are always in a safe condition,” she said.

Yesterday, Genting Malaysia announced that vehicles travelling along the route near the resort will soon have to pay a toll, though the details of the fees and start date are yet to be revealed.

Talks regarding a toll at the Gohtong Jaya roundabout first emerged in 2023 but were later suspended following a stop-work order issued by the Bentong Municipal Council.

Earlier today, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the ministry has no jurisdiction or regulatory authority over the private road in Genting.
