PETALING JAYA:

The developer of the land at Kampung Jalan Papan in Klang, which is at the centre of a demolition row, has stated its readiness to provide the state government with 2.8ha to build apartments for the affected residents.

executive councillor Borhan Aman Shah said a special exco meeting chaired by menteri besar Amirudin Shari on Oct 21 decided that Melati Ehsan Consolidated Sdn Bhd (MECSB) would hand over the land to the state government as a “win-win” solution to the dispute with the residents.

“It was also decided that demolition would only be allowed for untenanted structures,” Borhan, who is in charge of housing, said in a statement today.

“Following the decision, the state government issued an official letter to MECSB on Nov 11 to confirm their commitment to hand over eight acres of land as stated during the meeting, and ensure the demolition of tenanted houses is postponed until the handover is confirmed.

“Through its lawyers, MECSB stated its readiness to hand over seven acres of land, and several lots on Jalan Papan and Jalan Kerayong for new houses of worship.”

Borhan said this was a positive development, and marked an important step towards “more organised and sustainable development of (the residents’) resettlement”.

He also said the state government is ready to offer the residents temporary resettlement through its Smart Sewa scheme at reasonable rental rates.

“The state government’s commitment is clear: no settlers will be left without temporary housing while a permanent solution is being drawn up,” he said.
