Retired bus driver loses over RM700,000 in online investment scam

KLUANG: A retired bus driver lost more than RM700,000 after falling for an online investment scam promising lucrative returns.

The 73-year-old victim was lured by a WhatsApp message from an unknown sender claiming to be an investment agent offering high profits.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh said the victim registered an account on a website provided by the scammer.

“He made several online cash transfers in stages between Sept 8 and Nov 6, amounting to RM736,526 into five bank accounts,” Bahrin said in a statement today.

The syndicate allegedly showed the victim a fake investment account reflecting an impressive ‘profit’ of RM5.7 million.

When the victim attempted to withdraw the funds, he was told to make additional payments, which he refused.

He lodged a police report on Tuesday after he failed to withdraw his capitals, and believed he was scammed.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Bahrin urged the public to remain vigilant against similar online investment offers and to verify any schemes with the authorities.
