KOTA KINABALU, Nov 12 — Parti Warisan today unveiled a candidate list with 60 per cent newcomers for the Sabah state election, but which unexpectedly dropped deputy president Datuk Darell Leiking.
In an announcement that otherwise retained Warisan’s core leadership, president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal will defend his Senallang seat as the party aims to rebound from a series of defections that have diminished its numbers in the state assembly.
In the biggest surprise of the announcement, Leiking, was replaced in the Moyog seat by party vice president Datuk Terrence Siambun.
Leiking later said that he opted out to focus on his role as the party’s election director.
In another significant change, Shafie dropped Silam assemblyman Dumi Masdal in favour of his own brother, Datuk Yusof Apdal.
Among the notable new candidates is Fauziah Fuad Stephens, the youngest daughter of Sabah’s first chief minister, who will contest in Bengkoka.
Today’s announcement also features several intriguing family rivalries: in Pitas, former Sabah Oil & Gas CEO Datuk Harun Ismail (Warisan) will face his brother Datuk Bolkiah Ismail (Umno), while in Inanam, Warisan’s Edna Majimbun is expected to compete against her brother, who is running as an independent.
Alongside Shafie, other party vice presidents including Datuk Jaujan Sambakong (Sulabayan), Datuk Junz Wong (Tanjung Aru), and Datuk Dr Daud Yusof (Bongawan) will also defend their seats.
Shafie said the candidates – a mix of young and experienced professionals including lawyers, doctors, and engineers – were chosen for their integrity and ability to serve the people.
“This is what we want: a team of highly qualified, principled, and service-oriented individuals,” he said.
The Sabah election will be a critical test for Warisan, which formed the state government in 2018 and won 23 seats in the 2020 election.
However, a wave of defections has since reduced its number of assemblymen to just 14, making this election a crucial battle for its political relevance.
Nomination for the state election is this Saturday while polling is on Nov 29.
