GEORGE TOWN: Penang has once again proven why it reigns supreme as Malaysia’s food capital and one of the world’s most celebrated culinary destinations.

The island state has earned a remarkable 74 spots in The Michelin Guide Kuala Lumpur & Penang 2026, reinforcing its well-deserved title as the “Food Paradise” of Asia.

The announcement was made yesterday at the Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur, revealing that of the 151 eateries featured nationwide, nearly half hail from Penang.

The recognition includes two Michelin Stars, 33 Bib Gourmand awards, and 39 Michelin Selected eateries — a performance that state Tourism and Creative Economy Wong Hon Wai called “an extraordinary testament to Penang’s rich and diverse culinary culture.”

“Penang has once again delivered an outstanding performance in the latest Michelin Guide.

“This remarkable achievement further reinforces our reputation as a global food haven,” he said today.

This latest guide introduces 16 new entrants, evenly split between Kuala Lumpur and Penang.

Of Penang’s newcomers, three earned the Bib Gourmand distinction — Awesome Char Koay Teow, Bee Hwa Café, and Sifu Nyonya Cuisine — joining Malaysia’s growing list of 58 Bib Gourmand eateries, recognised for offering exceptional food at moderate prices.

Five more Penang establishments entered the Michelin Selected category, celebrated for their creativity and craftsmanship.

They are Blacklinen – a barbecue specialist balancing smoky finesse with elegant flair; Du-An (Lebuh Pantai) – a tribute to Malaysian heritage, reinventing local favourites; Mémoire – an intimate journey through personal stories and culinary nostalgia; Peninsula House – where Australian modernity meets Asian ingredients; and Sood by Chef Ton – bringing refined Thai contemporary dining to Penang’s shores.

Penang’s Michelin Star veterans, Au Jardin and Auntie Gaik Lean’s Old School Eatery, successfully retained their coveted stars.

“Their continued excellence shows unwavering commitment to quality and the artistry that defines Penang cuisine,” added Wong.

He also highlighted that Michelin recognition goes beyond prestige.

“It strengthens the local economy by drawing in food-loving travellers from across the globe.

“The Michelin Guide has become an important reference for culinary tourists. This recognition not only enhances Penang’s brand but also translates into tangible benefits for our tourism and dining industries,” he said.

Wong said the Michelin spotlight also inspired unlisted eateries to strive for higher standards in service, innovation, and ingredient quality.

“For restaurants not yet featured, the guide serves as motivation…a benchmark for culinary and service excellence.

“This pursuit of perfection elevates the entire Penang dining scene,” he noted.

As Penang continues to dominate Malaysia’s gastronomic map, its influence on the international stage only grows stronger.

From bustling hawker centres to elegant fine dining venues, the island’s food culture thrives on a blend of authenticity, innovation, and passion — qualities that have once again captured Michelin’s attention.

“We hope this prestigious guide will continue to inspire Penang’s culinary operators to refine their craft and elevate service standards.

“Together, we can ensure that Penang’s reputation as a ‘Food Paradise’ continues to shine on the world stage,” he said.

The first-ever Michelin Guide for Kuala Lumpur and Penang was unveiled on Dec 13, 2022, marking the inclusion of Malaysian restaurants in the prestigious guide for the very first time.

In the 2023 edition, four restaurants received one Michelin Star: Dewakan and DC. by Darren Chin in Kuala Lumpur, along with Auntie Gaik Lean’s Old School Eatery and Restaurant Au Jardin in Penang.
