GEORGE TOWN, Nov 11 — The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) in Penang has seized goods worth RM3.06 million in 804 cases involving various offences since January 1 this year.

KPDN Penang director S. Jegan said the offences ranged from inaccurate weighing instruments to unclear price displays.

“Since January, KPDN Penang has inspected 67,564 premises and issued RM461,800 in fines for various offences,” he said at a press conference after launching the Pasar Patuh programme today.

He said the ministry has been conducting enforcement operations at various premises to ensure compliance with the law.

Meanwhile, Jegan said KPDN Penang has received 2,288 public complaints this year, including 1,016 on prices, 191 on controlled goods and 1,081 on other issues.

Today, he launched the pilot Pasar Patuh (3P) programme at Chowrasta Market.

“The Pasar Patuh initiative was established to strengthen compliance among public market traders by emphasising clear price labelling, the use of accurate weighing instruments, and maintaining a clean and organised business environment,” he said.

He said the programme also aims to promote fair competition and protect consumer rights.

“It will foster public confidence in ethical and transparent trade practices,” he added.

Jegan said the 3P programme at Chowrasta Market involves 60 traders — 33 in the wet market zone, 20 in the semi-dry zone, six in the dry goods zone and two in the non-halal zone.

He said the initiative will be expanded in stages to other markets across the state.

“The implementation of this programme involves cross-agency cooperation among the government, industry and consumers,” he said, adding that participating agencies include local authorities, the Health Ministry, Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama), the Companies Commission of Malaysia, and certified weighing instrument verifiers.

He also urged the public to report cases of misconduct or non-compliance under the Kita Gempur campaign through official complaint channels.
