PETALING JAYA:

Sarawak police intend to start taking action under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) against drug dealers and syndicate members in the state.

“If there is sufficient information and evidence, we will take action under Sosma. This serves as a warning to those involved in syndicates and drug distribution activities,” Bernama quoted Sarawak police commissioner Zainal Abdullah as saying in Kuching.

“Action will be taken under Sosma not only against major distributors, but also smaller dealers to dismantle the entire network.”

Zainal noted that Peninsular Malaysia was already using Sosma in such cases, with proven effectiveness.

He said to combat drug abuse in communities, particularly in rural areas, the Sarawak government had provided instant visual drug detectors – devices that detect drug abuse via eye-scanning – to police since last year to facilitate early screening.

“I see a difference in approach in Sarawak compared with other states, and I am very pleased that a lot of support, especially from the state government, has been given to the police,” he said.
