KUCHING: The conferment of Japan’s Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star on Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg is an honour for Sarawak.

The Premier said the award reflects international confidence in Sarawak’s economic cooperation and renewable energy leadership.

“I would like to express my thanks for this award with a humble heart. I met the Emperor of Japan, who expressed pride in the good relationship between Malaysia and Japan,” he added.

Abang Johari spoke after receiving the award at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on Tuesday (Nov 11).

He said he introduced Sarawak to the Emperor, who was aware of new sector development in the state.

“This international award shows recognition of our economic policies,” he said.

He said these include environmental sustainability and the people’s wellbeing.

“We will work with countries that prioritise sustainability and increasing income for the people,” he said.

He hoped the award would inspire Sarawakians to strive for global excellence.

“This shows that if Sarawakians focus on new fields and succeed, the world will take notice,” he said.

Abang Johari was named among recipients of the Autumn Imperial Decorations announced earlier this month.

The Japanese Embassy said the award recognises his efforts to promote regional exchange and mutual understanding between Malaysia and Japan.
