KAJANG: Police have dismantled a love scam syndicate operating from a house here, arresting 13 foreign nationals.

The suspects, comprising 11 men and two women, were detained during a raid on November 5.

police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the syndicate had been active for nearly three months, targeting victims in Japan.

They used social media platforms like Instagram and Line to lure their targets with fake identities.

“Once they gained the trust of their targets, they would move the conversation to private messages, asking for personal information like phone numbers and social media accounts,” Shazeli said at a press conference in Shah Alam.

The syndicate used encrypted platforms Telegram and Signal to coordinate their illicit activities.

Police seized 11 mobile phones and laptops during the operation.

All suspects had their remand extended for three days, from November 8 to 11.

The case is being investigated under Sections 420 and 120B of the Penal Code for cheating and criminal conspiracy. – Bernama
