Controversial singer Wee Meng Chee, better known as Namewee, shared a “special relationship” with Taiwanese social media influencer Hsieh Yu-hsin, says Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus.
He told reporters during the Deepavali celebration at the city’s police headquarters that the two shared a relationship of “more than just close friends”, but declined to provide further details due to ongoing investigations.
He also said police had recorded statements from all involved, but did not specify the number, saying “the figures are not significant”.
Fadil said several individuals had tried to claim the body, but that police did not allow them to as their identities could not be verified.
Hsieh reportedly met with Wee at a hotel in the capital to discuss filming a video together. He was said to have found her dead in the bathtub.
Wee was nabbed by the police on Oct 22 at the hotel, where authorities discovered nine blue pills suspected to be ecstasy in the room. He later tested positive for amphetamine, methamphetamine, ketamine and THC.
He was charged with drug possession and consumption, but pleaded not guilty. The court allowed him to post bail of RM4,000 for each charge.
Police reclassified the death of Hsieh as murder after the initial classification of sudden death.
Wee surrendered himself to the police on Nov 5, and his remand has been extended until Thursday.
Separately, Fadil said police were preparing to charge Sheila Sharon Steven Kumar, better known as Inspector Sheila, who allegedly obstructed policemen on duty.
The 35-year-old was said to have belittled her colleagues while they were inspecting a Pakistani man during a traffic stop along Jalan Ipoh here on Nov 4.
