KUALA LUMPUR: Some 3,630 civil servants, personnel from private and government-linked companies, and politicians were convicted for various offences by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) between 2020 and September this year, says Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) said from the total, 1,945 were arrested for receiving bribes, 384 for giving bribes, 341 for abuse of power, 720 for false claims, 44 for money laundering, and 196 for other offences.

Within the same period, the MACC received 36,937 reports, covering both corruption-related and non-corruption-related offences.

“For reports that do not involve corruption elements, action was taken through the opening of Governance Investigation Papers (Kertas Penyiasatan Tatakelola, KPT) by the MACC, or by referring the cases to the relevant departments and enforcement agencies for further action.

“However, reports involving corruption elements were subject to operational investigation,” she said in reply to a question from Tan Kar Hing (PH-Gopeng)

Tan had asked the government on the effectiveness of the MACC in combating corruption.

Among members of the public, there were 1,705 arrests, including 888 for receiving bribes, 348 for giving bribes, 909 for false claims, 129 for abuse of power, 65 for money laundering, and 166 for various other offences, according to Azalina.
