KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 9 — The Health Ministry (MOH), through its Food Safety and Quality Division (BKKM), is investigating claims that a woman died after consuming a health supplement that recently went viral on social media.
BKKM said preliminary checks found that the product contained the active ingredient glutathione, which is listed under the Negative List — a list of substances or products prohibited under the Drug Registration Guidance Document (DRGD).
It also found that the product was being sold on e-commerce platforms and social media.
“Therefore, the product does not comply with Section 13B(2)(d) of the Food Act 1983, which prohibits the inclusion of any substance not permitted under the Act or its regulations.
“BKKM is conducting further investigations into the matter, including verifying the claims and examining product details such as labelling compliance, ingredients used, manufacturing premises, importers, and local market distribution,” the division said in a statement to Harian Metro today.
Earlier, a social media user on Threads claimed that a woman had died after taking a RM20 supplement sold online that purportedly lightens the skin.
BKKM said efforts were under way to trace the original source of the claim to verify its authenticity.
“Based on initial checks, there were no social media posts from close family members or friends confirming a woman’s death after taking the supplement in question.
“Anyone with information that could assist BKKM can contact 03-88850796 or email [email protected]
“BKKM will continue to monitor the issue and provide updates from time to time,” it added.
