KLANG: Some 105 traffic summonses were issued while 47 motorcycles were seized following a joint pre-dawn operation on Sunday (Nov 9) to curb illegal street racing activities along the Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas).

It is learnt that the location was where groups of so-called “mat rempit “were seen performing dangerous stunts and racing at high speeds.

The large-scale operation, which began at midnight, was conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department together with the South Klang traffic Division.

The enforcement team focused its efforts on the Jalan Kebun exit towards the Klang–Banting route — an area long identified as a hotspot for illegal motorcycle racing on weekends.

The stretch was often chosen by street racers for its straight six-kilometre road, bright lighting and wide lanes that make it suitable for high-speed stunts.

It is reported that some riders attempted to evade arrest by riding against traffic and escaping through narrow side roads, but their efforts were thwarted after officers sealed all exits.

Before the operation, the expressway had been turned into an illegal “racing circuit,” with riders seen performing perilous acts such as lying flat on their motorcycles and zig-zagging between vehicles, putting other road users at risk.

The scene turned chaotic when some riders realised police were closing in, prompting them to make sudden U-turns and ride against the flow of traffic.

police chief Comm Datuk Shazeli Kahar said the integrated operation aimed to combat street gangsterism and illegal racing activities that have become rampant along the Kesas Highway.

“We conducted a full closure of both directions of the Kesas Highway, covering 25 main junctions, all manned by traffic personnel with the assistance of the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the highway concessionaire,” he said.

He added that the closure covered KM18 to KM26.2 — a six-kilometre stretch identified as an active site for illegal racing.

Apart from the police, the operation also involved the Environment Department, the National Anti-Drugs Agency, JPJ and Kesas highway management.

*During the operation, 210 motorcycles were inspected and brought to the Klang Selatan Traffic Police Station for further action. Four individuals were arrested under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous riding.

“We issued a total of 105 summonses were issued for various traffic offences, while 48 motorcycles were seized under Section 64(1) of the same Act.

Environment Department officers also inspected eight motorcycles, issuing three summonses for environmental violations. Urine screenings by Anti-Drugs Agency found five riders tested positive for drugs — three for cannabis and two for ketum.

Comm Shazeli said similar operations will continue to be carried out to ensure the safety of road users and to curb illegal street racing activities that endanger lives.

“We urge youths not to get involved in these dangerous races that not only put their own lives at risk but also threaten the safety of others on the road,” he added.
