KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8 (Bernama) — Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) staff are not only committed to implementing development policies but also stress on far thinking human capital and work with integrity, its minister, Nga Kor Ming said.
He cited the various achievements in balancing physical development, social well-being and environmental sustainability by the ministry as proof, pointing out that the success would not have occurred without the extraordinary dedication of all ministry staff.
“This is the type that we need to lift up as excellence should not be allowed to drown in mediocrity in the civil service ecosystem. It must be allowed to shine, be respected and held up as examples so that all civil servants will make high performance as the norm,” he said during his speech at the KPKT Minister’s Excellence Award Ceremony (AKM) 2025, in the presence of the Prime Minister’s wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
He said the ministry’s success was also acknowledged when it was chosen as the Most Excellent and High Performing Ministry 2024, and created history by winning for major awards, including the National Development Award 2024 that acknowledged the ministry’s planning and implementation of high-impact projects.
On the AKM 2025, Nga said the awards were an extraordinary acknowledgement that offered civil servants the chance to be study at renowned universities such as Harvard University and Melbourne University on full scholarship.
“This initiative reflects the KPKT’s commitment towards knowledge, leadership and excellence, as well as efforts to inculcate excellence as a work norm in civil service,” he said.
AKM 2025 has 10 categories, including Minister’s Excellence Award, Best Leadership, Best Leadership (Local Authority), Inspirational Leadership, Leadership of Hope, Inspirational Icon, Best Organisation and Excellent Local Authority.
Meanwhile, National Solid Waste Management Department director-general Datuk Dr Mohd Azhar Abd Hamid, who won the Minister’s Excellence Award, said it was a duty to continue to carry out responsibilities with integrity and best practices.
“It also shows the ministry’s appreciation towards its staff, in line with ensuring excellence can be achieved,” he said.
Since its introduction in 2023, the biennial AKM has become a prestigious ceremony that celebrates excellent civil servants in ministries, departments, agencies and 156 local authorities in the country.
Winners receive a certificate, trophy, up to RM20,000 in cash, and the opportunity to take a short-term course at a renowned university abroad for selected categories.
