Sarawak’s governor calls on UTS graduates to contribute to state growth in technology, green energy and innovation during 10th convocation ceremony.
SIBU: Sarawak Governor Tun Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has urged University of Technology Sarawak graduates to embrace their role in driving the state’s development as a regional hub for technology, green energy and innovation.
Speaking at the university’s 10th Convocation Ceremony themed “Global Impact, Local Identity”, the UTS Chancellor congratulated the 149 graduates while reminding them the ceremony marked the beginning of new challenges rather than the end of learning.
He highlighted Sarawak’s strategic development initiatives under Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s leadership, including hydrogen energy, digital economy, infrastructure modernisation, high-tech agriculture, aerospace and space technology.
“These developments are not only engines of growth but also gateways of opportunity for UTS graduates to shape the future,” he said.
The governor emphasised the importance of unity and resilience, noting Sarawakians of all backgrounds standing together as one community represented a key strength for progress.
On constitutional matters, he stressed continued efforts to safeguard state interests under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 while rejecting attempts to undermine Sarawak’s aspirations.
Tun Wan Junaidi also urged graduates to uphold integrity and reject corruption, warning that knowledge without strong moral character could lead to downfall.
He highlighted the Sarawak Ombudsman Department’s establishment as among measures promoting clean and efficient governance.
“Honour the sacrifices of your parents and mentors,” he advised graduates.
“Let your success uplift your family, your community, and the nation.”
The governor expressed confidence UTS would continue growing as a respected global institution while encouraging graduates to pursue purpose-driven careers benefiting both state and nation.
“Class of 2025, UTS is proud of you,” he declared.
“Go forth and make Sarawak proud. The world awaits you.”
During the ceremony, he witnessed the conferment of Emeritus Professor Award to Datuk Dr Abdul Hakim Juri.
The convocation saw 42 graduates receive master’s degrees and 107 receive bachelor’s degrees from the governor. – Bernama
