Anwar says Asean hosting success is a collective Malaysian effort

BUTTERWORTH: Malaysia’s success in hosting Asean was a collective effort by all Malaysians, said Datuk Seri Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said the achievement involved Cabinet ministers, civil servants, police, local councils, volunteers, students and the security forces.

“The world saw our efficiency, hospitality and discipline,” he said.

He said Malaysia welcomed Asean leaders and major powers such as , the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Brazil and South Africa.

He said all were eager to build business and friendship with Malaysia, adding that Petronas now operates in Brazil and Malaysian firms build ships for export because of these ties.

He said new energy partnerships are forming across continents.

“This is how Malaysia strengthens its position as a credible, connected trading nation,” he said.

On trade agreements, said some questioned why he signed an agreement with President Donald .

He said critics pointed to US support for Israel’s actions in Gaza.

“Let me be clear, Malaysia remains a trading nation. Our foreign policy is non aligned, and we engage with all sides without compromising our principles,” he added.

He said Penang is home to tens of thousands working with American firms, adding that workers and supply chains would suffer if he he took an extreme stance and boycotted the US.

then said that he signed agreements with the US and also with to boost trade and cooperation.

He said this includes rare earth development.

“Malaysia deals with all, the US, , Australia and , while protecting our national interests,” he said.

He said some detractors will make noise, but progress for the country matters most.
