Police probing death of student who drowned during school programme

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have launched an investigation into the death of a 11-year-old student who drowned while participating in a school programme.

The boy was taking part in a Water Confidence Support Programme on Wednesday when he began experiencing difficulties in the swimming pool.

The boy was resuscitated and rushed to the Canselor Tuanku Muhriz Hospital in Cheras but died yesterday while still receiving treatment.

City police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said the incident took place at the Desa Tasik Sports Complex swimming pool, where the school had organised the support programme for its pupils.

“Police received a report regarding the incident, and the student was given follow-up treatment, but confirmed dead at 2.30pm yesterday,” he said in a statement.

Fadil said the boy’s remains were laid to rest at the As-Shuhadah Muslim cemetery in Sungai Udang, Melaka.

He said further investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
