KUCHING, Nov 7 — A 36-year-old man was sentenced to 12 months in jail for threatening to beat up his 71-year-old mother when demanding RM5 from her.

Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan handed down the sentence on Nurazan Firdaus Imran after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation to cause hurt.

The section provides for imprisonment of up to two years, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

He committed the offence at a house in Kampung Tabuan Lot here at around 12pm on October 5.

According to the facts of the case, Nurazan threatened his mother, who was in the kitchen, by saying in Sarawak Malay: “Mun ko sik berik duit, ko siap ku paluk ko” (“If you don’t give me the money, I’ll beat you up”).

Fearing for her safety, the victim lodged a police report, leading to Nurazan’s arrest.

Investigations revealed that he had acted aggressively while demanding RM5 from his mother and threatened to assault her when she refused to comply.

Further checks showed that Nurazan had been convicted twice under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for offences involving amphetamine and methamphetamine in 2019 and 2020, and once under Section 506 of the Penal Code in 2021.

He is also currently under investigation for another offence under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 this year.

Insp Nur Syafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted the case, while Nurazan did not have legal representation. — Bernama
