PETALING JAYA:

GISB Holdings Sdn Bhd (GISBH) CEO Nasiruddin Ali and 21 other senior leaders of the organisation will be released today after completing their 15-month jail terms for being part of an unlawful organisation.

Their sentences were backdated to September 2024, when they were first remanded, Utusan Malaysia reported.

All 22 had earlier today pleaded guilty to an alternative charge under Section 43 of the Societies Act 1966.

Nasiruddin, 66, and 12 other men were sentenced to 15 months’ jail. His wife, Azura Md Yusof, 58, and eight other women were fined RM4,500 each.

During proceedings at the Kajang prison court complex, judge Latifah Tahar said their guilty pleas and remorse were taken into account, and that the time already served was sufficient for their release.

Defence lawyer Rosli Kamaruddin said his clients were released immediately after accounting for weekends and public holidays.

“Today, all 22 accused are free and can return home once the prison administration completes the release process and refund of bail money,” he told reporters after the proceedings.

The Attorney-General’s Chambers had on Oct 30 accepted their representations to face an alternative charge of being members of an unlawful organisation under the Societies Act 1966.

They were previously charged with being members of an organised crime group under Section 130V(1) of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of between five and 20 years upon conviction.
