#SHOWBIZ: Meghan Markle returns to the big screen after 7 years

LOS ANGELES: Meghan Markle is reportedly heading back to the big screen for the first time in seven years.

According to multiple entertainment outlets, the Duchess of Sussex is set to make a cameo appearance as herself in ‘Close Personal Friends’, an upcoming comedy film.

The movie, produced by Amazon MGM Studios, stars Lily Collins and Brie Larson and follows two couples who become unlikely friends during a trip to Santa Barbara, California.

This brief appearance would mark Markle’s return to acting since leaving Hollywood in 2018.

While neither Markle nor Amazon has commented on the rumour, sources claim she was spotted on set during filming.

Production for the film began in London shortly after the movie’s announcement in August.

Collins gave fans a sneak peek of the project on Instagram on Sept 22, sharing a smiling selfie with her co-stars Larson, Henry Golding, and Jack Whitehall in a minimalist white room.

She captioned the post: “Close (personal) friends only…”, teasing the film’s title.

For Markle, the role marks her first on-screen appearance since portraying Rachel Zane on the hit series ‘Suits’, where she starred for seven seasons.

The 44-year-old left the show in 2018 to focus on her royal duties ahead of her marriage to Prince Harry.

At the time, Markle told the BBC that her decision was about transition, not sacrifice.

“I don’t see it as giving anything up, I see it as a change,” she said.

“Once we hit 100 episodes, I felt proud of what I had done and ready to move forward to work as a team with Harry.”

Three years later, Markle and Harry stepped down as senior working royals and relocated to the United States, where they are now raising their two children, Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4.

Since leaving royal life, Markle has explored new ventures, notably launching her lifestyle brand ‘As Ever’ and fronting the Netflix homemaking series, ‘With Love, Meghan’.

Despite this unexpected cameo, Markle has previously downplayed the idea of returning to acting full-time.

In 2022, she told Variety: “I’m done. I guess never say never, but my intention is absolutely not.”
