SHANGHAI: Bumiputera entrepreneurs, particularly those under the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara), can no longer be content with being “local champions” (jaguh kampung).

Instead, they must evolve and become more competitive by seizing opportunities in international markets.

Mara chairman Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said these entrepreneurs must recognise the vast potential that awaits those willing to step up and become global industry players.

“They have benefited significantly from tailored support in all aspects required to venture abroad. We no longer want Bumiputera entrepreneurs to just revolve around being ‘local champions’; we want them to become global players on the international stage,” he told reporters at the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (Mihas) @ Shanghai 2025 in .

He added that Mara’s Gate to Global (GTG) programme, implemented since 2017, has successfully helped Bumiputera entrepreneurs penetrate overseas markets.

To date, 132 entrepreneurs trained by Mara have entered international markets, generating total sales of RM632 million as of October.

“Here in Shanghai alone, we are showcasing 16 entrepreneurs ready to enter the Chinese market. This morning, MOAs and MOUs were signed with three Chinese buyer companies, with total sales amounting to RM55.5 million,” he said.

Asyraf Wajdi also expressed his appreciation to the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) for consistently providing platforms and opportunities for Bumiputera entrepreneurs to showcase their products globally.

Bumiputera products, ranging from health and beauty items to food and beverages, have reached international markets including Japan, Dubai, Australia, Germany, and Switzerland.
