KUALA LUMPUR: Tempers flared at the MBPJ Stadium on Wednesday night as frustrated Selangor fans staged a protest following the team’s early exit from the Asian Champions League 2 (ACL2).
The situation turned tense after the Red Giants suffered a 3-2 defeat to Indonesian champions Persib Bandung in their Group G match, which ended their hopes of advancing to the knockout stage.
Hundreds of supporters gathered outside the main entrance after the final whistle, demanding that the club’s top management come out to face them.
Chants calling for accountability echoed around the venue, with fans repeatedly mentioning Chief Executive Officer Dr Johan Kamal Hamidon’s name.
Some supporters reportedly forced their way into the main grandstand area and attempted to reach the VIP section in search of Dr Johan.
Others were seen blocking the stadium’s exit gates in a show of protest against what they perceived as poor management decisions that have led to the team’s struggles this season.
The commotion prompted the intervention of security personnel, who worked to calm the crowd and prevent further escalation.
It is understood that no major injuries were reported, although several videos circulating on social media showed fans confronting security staff and chanting slogans against the club hierarchy.
Selangor‘s defeat to Persib capped a disappointing ACL2 campaign in which they managed just one win from four matches.
The club have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident or the fans’ demands.
