KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor‘s Asian Champions League 2 (ACL2) campaign came to a premature end after suffering a 3-2 defeat to Indonesian champions Persib Bandung in their Group G clash at the MBPJ Stadium today.
Needing a win to keep their qualification hopes alive, Selangor made the perfect start when Chrigor Moraes opened the scoring in the third minute, calmly slotting home Alvin Fortes’ cross past goalkeeper Teja Paku Alam.
Their lead was doubled in the 17th minute when Persib centre-back Patricio Matricardi deflected the ball into his own net while attempting to clear Zach Clough’s cross.
The Red Giants, who lost to Persib in Bandung on Oct 23, appeared in control in the first half, with debutant Mamadou Diarra marshalling the defence to keep out the visitors’ attacking trio of Andrew Jung, Uilliam Barros and Berguinho.
However, Persib came out stronger after the break and began to press higher, eventually reducing the deficit in the 48th minute through Jung, who capitalised on a goalmouth scramble to beat Sikh Izhan Nazrel.
Selangor tried to respond but were forced to defend deep as Persib piled on the pressure, with their coach Bojan Hodak introducing Robi Darwis, Adam Alis and Beckham Putra in search of goals.
Selangor brought on striker Willian Lira to add fresh energy upfront, but Persib continued to dominate possession.
Adam drew Persib level in the 81st minute with a composed finish before the match was briefly disrupted by crowd trouble involving fans inside the stadium before order was restored and play resumed.
And Adam struck again deep into stoppage time to complete the comeback after pouncing on a poor clearance from Sikh Izhan.
The result confirmed Selangor’s elimination from the tournament, as they remain without a point after four matches.
