GUA MUSANG, Nov 6 (Bernama) — The Taman Agropolitan Rantau Manis area here is among 12 locations identified as new flood hotspots in the district, following changes in rainfall patterns and increased water flow from hilly areas.

President of the Gua Musang District Council (MDGM), Mohd Roshdi Ismail, said the main causes of flash floods in the areas include a drainage system that is no longer able to cope with heavy rainwater flow, in addition to rivers that require deepening work.

“Our side has identified 12 high-risk areas including Taman Agropolitan Rantau Manis and Felda Chiku. Some of these areas have never been hit by floods before, but are now becoming hotspots due to extreme weather changes.

“Maintenance allocations are being prepared by the relevant agencies and repair actions will be implemented in phases,” he told Bernama today.

Mohd Roshdi, who is also the Chairman of the District Disaster Operations Control Centre (PKOB), said technical agencies were also asked to cooperate with local residents through gotong-royong (communal work) to clear clogged drainage areas.

Meanwhile, resident Yah Omar, 43, said that since moving to the housing area in 2013, his house has been inundated five times due to overflowing from the nearby river.

“The flood last month was the worst. Every time it rains heavily for two hours, my house starts taking in water. We were forced to evacuate to higher ground and many household items were damaged,” he said.

Another resident, Che Rosri Che Rahim, 45, said the water level in the river near his house rises sharply when water starts surging down from the nearby hill causes flash floods.

“The small stream in front of the house connects to the river from the top of the hill. When it rains heavily, the water immediately overflows into the house,” he said, expressing hope that the authorities can widen the river path to reduce flood risks.
