A total of 49 current and former bank officers are set to be charged this month for allegedly receiving bribes from several law firms, a source from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said.
The source said the anti-graft agency had obtained approval to prosecute the individuals in phases, with charges to be filed at the Shah Alam sessions court.
“They are believed to have accepted bribes or commissions from several law firms in return for appointing those firms to handle loan agreement documents for clients applying for financial facilities at various banks between 2018 and 2023.
“The corrupt practices involving the law firms and bank officers were uncovered through Op Tiger, conducted around June 2024, where some of these commissions or payments were made even before the clients’ loan applications were completed,” the source added.
The source said that all 49 individuals are expected to be charged under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009, involving a total of 249 charges and an estimated bribe amount of nearly RM700,000.
