SEPANG: Four drug mules were nabbed with over 80kg of cannabis buds worth RM8.3mil at the Penang International Airport.
The suspects – two couples in their 20s – were detained by the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS), with the drugs inside four luggage bags at about 8.15pm on Monday (Nov 3).
AKPS director-general Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the attempt was detected when one of the couples was not allowed to board a flight and had their luggage rescanned.
“We detected the drugs and also detained the other couple as all four of them had checked in for the flights together.
“We discovered 86kg of cannabis worth RM8.3mil in four luggage bags, which were carried by both couples,” he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on Thursday (Nov 6).
Investigations revealed that all four of them had accepted an offer on TikTok to transport the bags with the final destination being Manchester, Britain, he said.
“They were each paid between RM8,000 and RM11,000 for the job.
“One of the suspects works in the oil and gas industry, another is an e-hailing driver, while two others have their own businesses,” he said.
“We believe all suspects were drug mules and we have handed them over to the Customs department for further action,” he added.
Comm Mohd Shuhaily advised the public not to be easily fooled by online job offers that promise lucrative pay in such a short time.
“Don’t ever transport bags or luggage that do not belong to you.
“A job which requires someone to transport such bags is definitely a red flag,” he cautioned.
