KUALA LUMPUR: Any proposal to amend or repeal the Sedition Act would require careful and comprehensive study involving all relevant stakeholders.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the review process must take into account the perspectives of enforcement agencies, the judiciary, academia, civil society organisations and the general public.
“The ministry, from time to time, undertakes efforts to improve existing legislation, including the act to ensure that its implementation remains appropriate and relevant to the current situation in the country while upholding human rights as enshrined in the Federal Constitution,” he said in written parliamentary reply to Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Baru).
Takiyuddin had asked whether the government intends to amend or abolish the Sedition Act, as promised in the Pakatan Harapan manifesto, to eliminate outdated and oppressive laws.
