SEREMBAN: The Immigration Department has detained 184 undocumented foreigners in an operation at a factory in Nilai, says its state director Kennith Tan Aik Kiang.

He said a total of 219 foreign workers were screened during the three-hour operation carried out at the factory, which manufactures batteries, on Tuesday (Nov 5).

Among those detained were aged between 20 and 49.

“Bangladeshis were the majority of those detained with 123 followed by 58 Myanmar nationals, two Pakistanis and one Indonesian. Among them were 21 women.

“Some of them had attempted to escape but were eventually caught,” he said, adding that police and Seremban City Council officers had also assisted in the operation.

Tan said the Immigration carried out the raid following a tip-off from the public.

He said among the offences committed were not having a valid travel document or working permit and overstaying.

They will be investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63, Passport Act 1963 and Immigration Regulations 1963.

“Those detained have been sent to the Immigration Depot for questioning and the next course of action,” he said.

Tan advised employers not to employ or harbour undocumented foreigners as stern action can be taken against them.

He also urged the public to report to the Immigration if they knew of foreigners being employed illegally.
