BERNAMA - Firm Action Against Civil Servant Misconduct To Prevent Recurrence

IPOH, Nov 5 (Bernama) — The government consistently takes firm action in cases involving civil servant misconduct, especially those related to abuse of power and corruption, said Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.

He said this was crucial as such misconduct carries significant implications for the country’s image.

“Firmness in taking action is essential to ensure that similar incidents do not recur,” he said when speaking at the Perak-level Taat Setia MADANI Roadshow here today, which was attended by about 2,000 participants.

The programme was officiated by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad. Also present were Perak State Secretary Datuk Ahmad Suaidi Abdul Rahim and Akademi Kenegaraan Malaysia (AKM) director-general Datuk Dr Roslan Hussin.

As such, Shamsul Azri urged civil servants to consistently uphold the principles of accountability, professionalism and responsibility in carrying out the duties entrusted to them.

He said every civil servant plays an important role in shaping public perception of the government and civil service as a whole.

In the meantime, he stressed that integrity, transparency and effectiveness are the pillars of a civil service trusted by the people, and as such, several approaches and guidelines have been introduced to ensure these values are upheld.

“Among them, directives and integrity regulations that clearly state that no civil servant is allowed to make statements on social media that could harm the government’s image, unless they have been officially authorised to do so.

“This is not to restrict freedom of expression, but to ensure the information shared with the public is accurate, responsible and not misleading,” he said.

At the same time, he said civil servants must serve with sincerity, not seeking recognition or praise, but fulfilling the trust placed in them.

He added that they should also be open-minded and willing to accept feedback, listen to views and improve weaknesses to remain close to the people.

“The attitude of shirking duties and questioning responsibilities only creates distance and alienation between the people and the administration,” he said, adding that civil servants must truly understand the hardships faced by the people, whether they are farmers or those living in urban areas.
