PETALING JAYA:

Sabah Bersatu has maintained a steady outlook ahead of the state election to come despite the recent departure of its deputy chief, Aksyah Nasrah, who declared support for Gabungan Rakyat Sabah instead.

Sabah Bersatu secretary Yunus Nurdin said Aksyah’s decision had not weakened the party as he lacked influence among the grassroots at the divisional level.

“We wish him well and hope that he finds better success in another party. Who knows, he might thrive there.

“In politics, everyone is free to choose their own path,” Yunus told FMT.

Aksyah, the Kinabatangan Bersatu chief, said yesterday that he was relinquishing all party positions with immediate effect.

He said he had submitted his resignation letter to Sabah Bersatu chief Ronald Kiandee, and that his decision was untouched by external influences.

He said it was important to ensure that Sabah is led and managed by local leaders while maintaining strong ties with the federal government.

Yunus, who is a member of the Bersatu Supreme Council, dismissed the notion that Aksyah’s move amounted to sabotage, saying it was normal for politicians to seek a more “comfortable” platform.

“I wouldn’t go so far as to say that this amounts to sabotaging or disrupting Perikatan Nasional’s efforts for the state election,” he added.
