LIMBANG, Sept 11 (Bernama) – The Sarawak–Sabah Link Road Phase 2 (SSLR2) project, launched today, is expected to unlock greater economic opportunities, strengthen ties between Sarawak and Sabah, and provide a safer and more reliable road network for rural communities.
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the RM7.6 billion project, approved in 2023, will span 335 kilometres, covering the Miri, Limbang, Lawas, and Ba’kelalan areas.
“When completed, residents will have a choice of roads to travel between Sabah and Sarawak without having to cross international routes. Rural residents will also no longer rely on logging roads as the main route,” he said at the launch of the project by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Nanga Medamit, near here, today.
Also present were Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
According to Nanta, the SSLR2 is a continuation of SSLR Phase 1 in Lawas, which began in 2021 and has achieved 57.6 per cent progress as of last July.
He said the implementation of the mega project would be in packages, with today’s ceremony being held at the Package 2B site from Long Napir to Nanga Medamit.
The project is expected to stimulate the growth of agro-based and eco-tourism industries in the affected areas, while also promoting inclusiveness in the spirit of national unity, he said.
Meanwhile, he reminded the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR), as the implementing agency, to ensure that the contractor, Maltimur Aktif Unggul (MAUJV) Sdn. Bhd, completes the project in full compliance with the agreed scope, cost, and timeline.
“We want this project to be completed Ahead of Time (AOT), not subject to repeated Extension of Time (EOT). Every task must be carried out with full responsibility and integrity,” he stressed.
Nanta also called on the local community to cooperate fully to facilitate the construction process and prevent any disruptions or delays.
“This SSLR2 project reflects the strong commitment of both the federal government and the Sarawak government to ensure that every citizen enjoys improved access to infrastructure and development opportunities,” he said.
