Sudan urges OIC, Muslim nations to act against RSF in Darfur

KUALA LUMPUR: Sudan has called on the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and Muslim nations to take stronger action against those accused of arming the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Darfur.

The Ambassador of the Republic of the Sudan to Malaysia, Hassan Abdel Salam Omer, said that while the OIC had condemned the humanitarian violations committed by the RSF, Sudan expects greater involvement from the organisation and individual countries to bring peace to the country.

“I would like to thank and appreciate the statement issued by the OIC for condemning the atrocities committed by the RSF.

“It will show the position of OIC solidarity with Sudan and condemnation of the crimes that took place in El Fasher and in Sudan in general.

“But yet we are looking for more, this is part of Ummah solidarity is expected, and we anticipate greater involvement from the OIC as an organisation and from individual countries in bringing peace to Sudan,” he said in a press conference here today.

The envoy said the government and people of Sudan are urging the international community to designate the RSF as a terrorist organisation, in line with international counterterrorism norms and the United States’ recognition of its genocidal crimes.

He also called for an investigation into the genocide in El Fasher and for all perpetrators to be held accountable.

“The international community must also condemn and halt foreign interference in Sudan, including the supply of banned weapons and aerial support to the RSF.

“Without such foreign assistance, this war would not have lasted this long,” he said.

Hassan further urged the international community to ensure the full implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2736 (2024) and to demand the immediate withdrawal of RSF forces from El Fasher.

He also called for targeted sanctions to be imposed on all individuals, governments, and entities providing the RSF with funding, weapons, mercenaries, or political backing.

“The international community should also support Sudan’s transitional government and its roadmap presented to the UN Secretary-General for achieving a permanent ceasefire, disarmament of militias, and the unification of the national army under one command,” he said.

On Nov 3, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ibrahim said Malaysia has called for an immediate cessation of violence and for the protection of civilians in full accordance with international humanitarian law.

Since the RSF’s incursion into El Fasher on Oct 23, the UN has reported executions, killings, rapes, attacks on aid workers, looting, abductions, and forced displacement.

Sudan’s civil war, ongoing since April 2023, has caused thousands of deaths and displaced about 14 million of its 51 million people, the largest humanitarian crisis on record.
