MELAKA: A married couple has been remanded for six days for allegedly abusing their nine-year-old adopted son with a lighter and hot water.

Police said the alleged abuse followed the boy losing his coloured pencils at school.

The Magistrate’s Court in Ayer Keroh issued the remand order on Wednesday (Nov 5).

It is to assist investigations under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.

The section covers ill treatment, neglect, abandonment or exposure of a child likely to cause harm.

If convicted, the offence carries a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment of up to 20 years or both.

The remand followed a report lodged at the Batu Berendam police station by the victim’s uncle, which led to the couple’s arrest on Tuesday (November 4).

The victim has been placed under the care of the authorities for protection and medical assessment.
