MIRI, Nov 5 — A woman in distress onboard Malaysia Airlines Flight MH2574 last Saturday met ‘a knight in shining armour’, in the form of Dr Chung Ghi Waie, a paediatric specialist at the Selesa Pacific Hospital.

During the flight, Dr Chung was supposed to be winding down from a getaway to Japan, but a female passenger suddenly struggled to breathe, clutching her chest in pain.

Dr Chung rose without hesitation in response to the call by the cabin crew – far from operating rooms and medical equipment, he helped stabilise the passenger and by the time the plane touched down in Miri, she was stable and able to breathe normally.

Her mother and brother later flooded social media with gratitude, and netizens hailed Dr Chung as a ‘hero physician’.

The feat by Dr Chung, also captain of the Citi Chaser Pickleball Club, was also lauded on the club’s Facebook page and Instagram pages.

“Most of us would still be in ‘holiday mode’, but a true healer never switches off,” they wrote.

“Hippocrates said it best: ‘Wherever the art of medicine is loved, there is a love of humanity’.

“And we see that love in you, Captain Dr Chung.”

Dr Chung deflected the praise and spotlight, telling The Borneo Post that he ‘didn’t see himself as a hero’.

“I was simply fulfilling my duty as a medical professional to provide help when it was needed.

“I’m glad I was able to assist, and that the passenger received timely care.”

The Citi Chaser Pickleball Club also wrote this in the caption of the reel: “And yes, @malaysiaairlines – we strongly vote you sponsor his honeymoon flights.” — The Borneo Post
