Ahmad Zahid’s China visit aims to strengthen halal and trade ties

Deputy PM Ahmad Zahid’s visit focuses on halal industry cooperation, TVET partnerships and boosting RM484 billion bilateral trade relations.

SHANGHAI: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s four-day working visit to aims to strengthen longstanding bilateral relations between the two nations.

The Rural and Regional Development Minister said the visit will enhance cooperation in halal industry, Technical and Vocational Education and Training, and trade sectors.

“This visit reflects our shared commitment to the New Golden Era of Malaysia- Cooperation,” he stated in a Facebook post.

Ahmad Zahid will attend the 8th China International Import Expo opening and officiate the Malaysia International Halal Showcase Shanghai 2025.

He will also visit the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia Pavilion and witness several Memorandum of Understanding exchanges.

The Deputy Prime Minister expressed hope that the visit would strengthen trust, drive innovation and create new opportunities benefiting both nations.

Ahmad Zahid arrived in Shanghai last night following an invitation from the Chinese government to attend the CIIE.

The expo is held at the National Exhibition and Convention Center and provides a Belt and Road Initiative platform for countries to export goods to China.

This marks his first attendance at the expo and Malaysia’s second highest-level participation since the event began in 2018.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ibrahim attended the 7th CIIE last year.

Ahmad Zahid will witness the MoU exchange between Majlis Amanah Rakyat and Shanghai Jiao Tong University today.

He will also grace the opening of the CIDBH Information Centre during his visit.

China has been Malaysia’s largest trading partner for 16 consecutive years since 2009.

Bilateral trade reached RM484.12 billion in 2024, accounting for 16.8% of Malaysia’s total global trade of RM2.879 trillion.

Malaysia recorded RM61.79 billion in halal exports in 2024, representing a 15% increase from the previous year.
