IPOH, Nov 4 — Two men were fined RM5,000 each by the Magistrate’s Court here today after pleading guilty to impersonating traffic police and demanding money from two teenage boys last Saturday.
Magistrate Mohd Harith Mohd Mazlan ordered Wong Jiun Wei, 24, and Lim Boon Ping, 40, to serve 12 months in jail if they fail to pay.
The pair stopped a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old in front of a restaurant on Tong Seng Street, Jalan Lebuh Bercham Selatan 1, Taman Ipoh Timur Baru, Kinta district, at 12.38 am on Nov 1, and demanded money to avoid issuing summonses or taking them to the police station.
They were charged under Section 419 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of seven years, a fine, or both.
In the same court, Wong was also fined RM2,000, in default five months’ jail, for possessing police equipment, including a Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) cap marked Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) and JSPT boots, under Section 89 of the Police Act (Amendment) 2004.
The prosecution highlighted the public interest and the offence’s impact on police integrity, noting evidence of a RM400 money transfer.
Defence counsel said it was the first offence for both men, who work as a restaurant assistant and an electrician earning around RM1,500 a month, and urged for leniency.
Court records show the accused wore uniforms resembling traffic police, including cream-striped black trousers, and threatened to issue summonses over modified motorcycles unless the victims paid. — Bernama
