SEGAMAT: Residents here were once again rattled when a weak 2.7-magnitude earthquake hit the area today.
“We were standing when suddenly the house shook,” said resident Ahmad Asri Talib, 52, after the district was once again hit by a tremor.
Asri said the quake occurred at 7.55pm while he and his family were at their home in Kampung Tengah.
“At that time, I was standing when the house suddenly shook. I didn’t realise it was an earthquake at first, and everyone started asking about the tremor.
“The shaking lasted for about two seconds, and afterwards, our WhatsApp group consisting of neighbours and relatives began asking the same thing,” he said when contacted.
Tremors were also felt in several areas, including Kampung Pogoh Tengah, Taman Yayasan, Jalan Seberang Batu Badak, Kampung Gudang Garam, and Gemereh.
Residents in Kampung Paya Dalam, Kampung Tasek, Kampung Gubah, Taman Berjaya Buloh Kasap, Kampung Pogoh, and Paya Pulai also reported feeling the tremor.
Another resident, Nori Azman, 34, said the tremor was also felt in Kampung Bukit Lintang.
“We were resting when we suddenly felt the shaking. It has been more than two months since the last aftershock, and now it’s happening again.
“Although it was only a minor tremor, it was enough to frighten us. We pray to be spared from any disasters,” he said.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) confirmed the quake, saying a weak earthquake was detected in Jementah at 7.55pm.
“The 2.7-magnitude earthquake occurred at 2.5 degrees North and 102.8 degrees East, with a depth of 10 kilometres.
“It occurred about three kilometres from Segamat. Tremors were felt in Segamat and surrounding areas,” it said in a statement.
Segamat first recorded a 4.1-magnitude quake, followed by a 3.2-magnitude tremor on Aug 27, 2.5 on Aug 28, and 3.4 on Aug 29.
A 2.7-magnitude quake was also recorded in Semerah on Aug 30, while a 2.9-magnitude tremor was detected in Parit Yaani, Batu Pahat, on Aug 31.
