#SHOWBIZ: Musical on KL's 'City Father' to be staged in December

KUALA LUMPUR: Widely credited as the federal capital’s moderniser and often called KL’s ‘City Father’, Kapitan Cina Yap Ah Loy is set to see his life story made into a musical this Dec 13 and 14.

Kapitan The Musical is an original production which focuses on Yap’s life as a tin miner and how he rose the ranks as a community leader in the small but growing tin mining settlement that was Kuala Lumpur back in the 1860s.

While not the actual founder of Kuala Lumpur as that honour goes to Raja Abdullah the Orang Besar of Klang as well as Yap’s mentor Kapitan Cina Hui Siew, Yap is known for single-handedly modernising the future Malaysian capital by introducing its earliest police stations, markets and schools, and it was in his lifetime that Sultan Abdul Samad Shah of made KL the state capital replacing Klang.

Kapitan The Musical will be staged at Thean Hou Temple in Bukit Seputeh at 3pm and 7.30pm.

It is produced by Opus Harmonia Association (OHA) in collaboration with the PJ Philharmonic Orchestra Academy (PJPOA), with lyrics by Chin San Sooi and music by Lam Siu Chong.

All proceeds will go towards supporting Malaysian performing arts and cultural education.

Entry is by support contribution of a minimum of RM100 per seat.
