Police hunt robber falsifying stolen motorcycle chassis number

KUALA LUMPUR: Police are on the hunt for a man believed to be an expert in altering the chassis numbers of stolen motorcycles.

Sentul police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahari said the suspect’s activities were uncovered following the arrest of three men aged between 25 and 40, who were allegedly involved in an armed robbery at a petrol station in Batu Tiga, Jalan Ipoh, on Oct 21.

“Investigations revealed that one of the robbery suspects, who remains at large, is also believed to offer services to change the chassis numbers of stolen motorcycles using a specialised marking machine.

“He would grind off the original chassis number before engraving a new one.

“The aim was to deceive authorities, as the alteration would not be visible to the naked eye.

“However, forensic investigations through etching analysis can reveal the original number beneath the new markings,” he told reporters today. THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

“Police first detained a 29-year-old man driving a Perodua Kancil on Oct 23, followed by two more suspects aged 25 and 32 in separate operations around the next day.

“A third raid on Oct 25 led to the arrest of a 40-year-old man, the registered owner of the same vehicle,” he said.

He said the suspects have been remanded for between three and 10 days for further investigation.

Sukarno said four men were involved in the petrol station robbery.

“The incident caused losses of about RM975.

“With the arrest of these three suspects, police have solved three cases of armed gang robbery and four motorcycle theft cases in Kuala Lumpur,” he said.

He urged anyone with information on the remaining suspect to contact the Sentul district police operations room at 03-4048 2222.
