KOTA BHARU, Nov 3 — Police have confirmed that the suspect in the fatal shooting of a Malaysian man in Sungai Golok yesterday is a former Kelantan football import.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the identification was made following an internal investigation by his officers today, the New Straits Times reported.
He said police have launched a manhunt for the suspect, who is believed to hold dual citizenship.
“Based on our investigation, we managed to identify the suspect as a former foreign player for the Kelantan football team,” he was quoted saying.
Mohd Yusoff said roadblocks have been set up, and all border enforcement agencies have been ordered to tighten surveillance.
He added that the victim, aged 33, had four previous criminal records related to drug offences.
“The victim was involved in drug abuse and possession since 2020,” he said.
Investigations indicated that the victim had entered Thailand using a border pass on the morning of the shooting.
When asked if the murder was linked to drug-related debts, Mohd Yusoff said the matter is under investigation by Thai authorities.
Earlier reports said the victim, identified as Mohd Fuad Fahmie Ghazali, was shot eight times after an argument around 6.40pm and later died at Sungai Golok Hospital, while his pregnant wife claimed he was hit by 18 bullets fired by two men who fled the scene.
