KUALA LUMPUR: The national women’s doubles squad went to three European tournaments and came back with one title — the Arctic Open through Pearly Tan–M. Thinaah.
Coach Rosman Razak was also pleased with the performance of
back-up pair Carmen Ting–Ong Xin Yee.
He said there was a big positive from them in the European swing.
Carmen–Xin Yee, both aged 19, are in their first full season in the senior squad.
The world No. 34 pair reached their first quarter-final in a Super Series event — the Hylo Open — on Friday before bowing out to Taiwan’s world No. 18 Hsu Yin Hui–Lin Jhih Yun (21-17, 21-16).
They advanced to the last 16 of the Denmark Open but lost in the opening round of the French Open last week.
“We managed to get one title during this European trip, while the results in the other tournaments were average,” said Rosman.
“Carmen–Xin Yee’s progress looks good, but their standard is still quite far from the top players. They have the ability and are still young, so we have to be patient in investing in this pair.
“I’m grateful to BAM for continuously giving them exposure in (World Tour) tournaments.”
Carmen–Xin Yee will compete in the Kumamoto Masters in Japan on Nov 11–16, where world No. 2 Pearly–Thinaah are the top-ranked pair in the Super 500 event.
World No. 22 Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing are expected to withdraw from the Kumamoto Masters due to the latter’s calf injury.
The injury forced Pei Kee–Mei Xing to concede a walkover against Turkiye’s world No. 35 Ercetin Bengisu–Nazlican Inci (21-13, 14-13 rtd) in the Hylo Open in Germany earlier this week. They also conceded a walkover at the French Open last week due to the same injury.
