Transport Ministry proposes 16 safety recommendations to prevent heavy vehicle crashes

: The Transport Ministry has proposed 16 safety recommendations, covering six key areas, to prevent fatal collisions involving heavy vehicles.

These include enhanced compliance with industry code of practice (ICOP)–safety standards, improvements to the Road Transport Act 715, and additional safety features in government vehicles, such as seat‑belts for all passenger seats.

The recommendations follow the release of the final report on the fatal collision involving a gravel laden lorry and a Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) truck on Jalan Chikus–Sungai Lampam, Teluk Intan, on 13 May 2025.

Investigations revealed that the primary cause of the crash was the overloaded tipper lorry carrying gravel, which exceeded 70 per cent of the vehicle’s permissible gross weight.

This caused the lorry to lose control and collide with the FRU vehicle, which was returning to Ipoh as part of a convoy.
