Home Ministry studying plan to link school CCTV with police network

KUALA LUMPUR: The Home Ministry is studying a proposal to link closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems installed in schools with the police network for real-time monitoring.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail welcomed the suggestion but said it would take time to refine, given the need to assess hardware, systems and networking requirements.

“The Education Ministry (MOE) has been allocated RM8 million to install CCTV in strategic areas within schools.

“This is aimed at improving safety and surveillance measures.

“Some members of parliament have asked whether these CCTV systems can later be linked to the police network.

“I welcome this idea, but it involves hardware, system and networking aspects.

“I will ask the Home Ministry to explore the feasibility of implementing this so that real-time monitoring can be carried out,” he said in his winding-up speech uring the debate on the 2026 Supply Bill in parliament today.

Previously, the MOE set several criteria for installing CCTV in school dormitories this year, prioritising high-risk schools with bullying concerns.

Saifuddin also said that more police would be assigned to schools for patrols through “omni-presence” operations.

In line with the Cabinet’s directive, he said police had been instructed to increase surveillance using mobile patrol vehicles (MPVs) and motorcycle patrol units.

“This will help enhance public confidence in school safety and deter potential offenders,” he said.

He also called on Parent-Teacher Associations (PIBG) to play a proactive role in addressing emerging issues in schools.

According to the latest statistics, 87 bullying cases were recorded between August and September this year.

As for rape cases occurring within school grounds, 112 incidents were reported between 2022 and 2025 – 27 in 2022, 22 in 2023, 29 in 2024, and 34 as of September 2025.

Two murder cases have also been recorded within school compounds – involving a student from Lahad Datu Vocational College and another from SMK Bandar Utama.
