GEORGE TOWN, Oct 30 — All flood evacuees in Penang returned home within three days.

Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said the flood situation in the state was resolved within two to three days.

“According to the statistics obtained by the state, three districts in Penang were affected by floods — North Seberang Perai, Central Seberang Perai and the South-west district in the island,” he said in a press conference after announcing the Penang International Science Fair at the Penang Science Cluster here today.

He said seven temporary evacuation centres (PPS) were opened after flooding in some areas at the three districts following heavy rain last week.

“A total of 1,201 victims from 333 families were involved,” he said.

The PPS were opened on October 24 and closed on October 27 after the evacuees returned home.

Chow said the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) will be channelling financial assistance to eligible victims soon.

He said so far, no government assets were affected by the floods.

As for the clearing works due to landslide along Jalan Tun Sardon, he hoped that the works will be completed soon.

He said the road closure affected thousands of users, who now have to take a longer route

He said the landslides along that road occurred at sites that were not strengthened with concrete.

“The affected slopes from previous landslide incidents had all been repaired and lasted for almost seven to eight years since then,” he said.

He said the current landslide site may need to be repaired using the same method, with concrete embankments.
